Legalities
Spain is notoriously a country of bureaucracy where huge amounts of paperwork are required for anything from applying for a driver´s licence to having gas or electricity connected in your home. Organising the documents required for a marriage is no less complicated and although it is possible for non-resident Roman Catholics to marry in Spain, the amount of time and expense involved in collecting together all the paperwork required, officially translating and legalising documents, makes it a long and arduous process. However, some couples are undaunted by the work involved and opt for this route. This is particular popular option with couples from Southern Ireland.
The other option and by far the simplest, is to have your civil ceremony in the U.K. or your
country of origin before coming to Mallorca (see the
Anglican Church web site: www.anglican-mallorca.org). Once you have your marriage certificate from your local Registry Office in your hand, you will have no further problems and your “real” wedding can be celebrated over here in style without any worries regarding legalities.
Civil marriages for non-residents are not possible in Mallorca.
